SWS Theme Of The Month: April (Bridal) Showers

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

I am dedicating the month of April to writing about bridal showers and bridesmaids. As you plan, host and attend any upcoming bridal showers my April aim is to provide you with creative and useful tips and serve as a helpful resource. My goal is to share recipes, inexpensive favor ideas, games and gifts, plus whatever else I uncover during my shower exploration. I hope that you too will share your bridal shower questions, experiences and creative solutions so that all reading will benefit.

Happy April Showers,

Elle

SWS’s Top Ten Wedding Guest Picks Of 2009

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

The 2009 wedding season included at least 6 engagements, 5 weddings, 5 bachelorette parties, 5 bridal showers, 4 round trip plane tickets to and from wedding events, 3 bridesmaid dresses, 2 engagement parties and 1 partridge, no wait, 1 bridal shower. Did I attend them all? Almost all.

How did I survive wedding season this year? For starters I had to learn how to say no. While I still have to purchase 3 wedding gifts - thank you holiday bonus and the understanding of my newlywed friends - I learned a multitude of ways to survive this year and want to share with you my top picks for 2009:

Save $10 on Orders of $99 or More

  1. Staying within a budget ala The Wedding Diet.
  2. Getting money back by either Reselling Your Bridesmaid Dress or getting a tax break by Donating Your Dress To Charity.
  3. Increasing shoe longevity and wear-ability with Solemates.
  4. Discovering affordable lingerie at Loehmanns and quality guest gifts at Ross.
  5. Identifying killer wedding products like Canditto’s creative and easy-to-use solution for archiving and sharing wedding guest photos and Creative Custom Cardboxes‘ beautiful and original designs.
  6. Trying on the best Bridesmaid dress ever by TwoBirds Bridesmaid that I will absolutely re-wear in 2010, and always showing up prepared with a cover-up.
  7. Uncovering unique Bachelorette Party themes and resources including a shooting range celebration, a scavenger hunt, yoga on the beach and a bachelorette party planner: Bride’s Night Out!
  8. Learning not only where to party in Las Vegas and Miami but also what to expect at a Hindu wedding and a Rehearsal Dinner.
  9. Looking outside the wedding registry and uncovering truly distinctive gift alternatives like custom garters, the vinturi wine aerator, cooking classesTastebooks, Nature’s Notebook custom prints, personalized wedding poems and one-of-a-kind dbO Home accessories.
  10. Remembering that traditionally you have a year to purchase a wedding gift but no matter what, always remember to bring a card.

Happy Holidays, Elle Shapiro

This FIAZ CO Clutch Is A Clutch Bridesmaid Gift

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

This past August my boyfriend and I traveled to Washington, D.C. for wedding number two of this wedding season.  Again I was part of the bridal party, and again I was so very excited for the wedding.  The Thursday night before the wedding we flew out on the red-eye from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. specifically so that I could make it in to town for the day-before-the-wedding events including the Bridesmaid brunch, the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.

To start the day’s events there was also a manicure/pedicure session at Georgetown Nails but as we only arrived at seven in the morning I declined the time so I could get in a nap.  If I didn’t sleep right then there was no way I was going to make it to the reception and still look good on film.  But rest assured I did manage to get my nails done the Wednesday night before we left town at Mademoiselle Nails in Eagle Rock (for half the price of Gtown nails) and they were still in good shape for Saturday’s wedding.

Please note that while there is no specific bridal etiquette that says you absolutely must have manicured nails the day of the wedding I do think it is super important to have nice nails at special events and memorable affairs, even if it is just clear polish.

Manicured and rested - thank you W Hotel for having such fantastic, sun-blocking window curtains - I caught up with the bride-to-be and the eight other Bridesmaids. They were brunching at the delicious Peacock Cafe in Georgetown. I arrived amidst veggie burgers, Paul Newman sandwiches, french fries and white wine for all.

After eating, my friend the bride presented the nine of us with two thank you gifts. The first, a scarf we were to wear during the wedding ceremony over our black dresses (note, the dresses were our choice). The second, a custom-designed silk clutch from FIAZ CO on Etsy which is what I want to share with you now.

Chloe Collection Lined in Ink Silk ($55)

Every woman at the table opened her present to find a clutch inside that absolutely represented her unique and diverse sense of style. Go bride for such amazing attention to detail and really knowing your girls! Aside from the shape of the bag, not one was identical.

My clutch was cream with gold accents in the thread. It had a muted, classic, floral pattern woven into the fabric. The silk lining inside was teal and it was the perfect size for the wedding day because it fit my camera, my phone, some gum, my money, the hotel key and my Hollywood Fashion Tape. So, while my clutch was custom-made with me in mind, I did go look up this seller on ETSY only to find some absolutely beautiful designs.

While jewelry is certainly a very common Bridesmaid thank you gift that can also be worn the day of the wedding- see jewelry-designer Amelia Lock’s Expert Survival Tip on designing your own Bridesmaid jewelry here - there are other potential gifts to be gifted like the monogrammed spa robe I once received and love so much. But if you are looking for an alternative to jewelry because it is either out of your price range, or it is not your priority, check out these gorgeous and functional FIAZ CO designs. I know at least ten very fashionable - and particular - women who sure love ‘em.

Beach Bike Riding Bachelorettes

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Contrary to popular belief, bachelorette parties - or extended party weekends - do not have to be all about partying until you pass out and promising to delete your photos from the night’s adventures!

Much like when we found ourselves doing Yoga On The Beach, you can plan some truly relaxing and good-for-you bachelorette activities in addition to a night out.  After all, the most important part of a bachelorette party is to have a last single lady hurrah with your nearest and dearest girl friends. So give yourselves some feel-good moments (that you’ll remember) in addition to the late-night festivities.

If you live in Los Angeles, we at Survive Wedding Season™ recommend heading to Santa Monica and renting bikes to ride along the beach.

We started the day with brunch at Lula’s and then drove over to the Santa Monica pier.  Sea Mist Rentals (310.395.7076) provided the bikes at the hourly rate of $6.  Had the weather been just a little cooler we might have gone in on the $15 rate and had the bikes for the whole day.

The guys at Sea Mist were great; very helpful and made sure that before we took off our bikes were perfectly adjusted. Starting in Santa Monica the six of us rode along the beach all the way past Venice. Before heading back, we made a quick stop to put our feet in the Pacific. The sun was shining, the ocean breeze was to our backs, and there was still some Single Ladies dancing to be done well into the night!

But don’t forget your sunscreen!

We recommend: Dermalogica’s Full Spectrum Wipes SPF15.
