Cherry Clafoutis

(Serves 6)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of fresh sweet cherries, pitted
  • ¼ cup tablespoons of slivered almonds
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • ½ cup of whole wheat pastry flour, sifted
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of whole organic milk
  • 2 teaspoons of Amaretto, or ¾ teaspoon of almond extract
  • 1 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Confectioner’s sugar for dusting

Method:

Preheat the oven to 350F. Butter and lightly flour a 9X9-baking dish. Toss the cherries and slivered almonds into the baking dish. Whisk the eggs, sugar, salt, ground cinnamon and flour together until smooth. Add the milk, Amaretto (or almond extract, if using), and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth. Pour into the baking dish. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until lightly browned, and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Place on a wire rack to cool. The clafoutis will puff up a bit but will deflate while cooling. When cool dust the clafoutis with powdered sugar. Enjoy!

Are you a photographer? A floral designer? A chef? A wedding planner? A singer? A jewelry or fashion designer? A make-up artist? A hair stylist? What about a seamstress? A bar tender? An ice sculptor? Maybe you own a small vineyard? A painter or graphic designer?

What if you are any of these occupations above - either professionally or as a hobby - and you cannot afford to both attend a wedding and get a gift? Can you contribute your services instead? The answer is yes.

Maybe you offer your services as a day-of wedding coordinator or you design the bridesmaid jewelry? Maybe you come early and do the bride’s hair or if you are the vineyard owner maybe you contribute the wine to the event? As a designer do you create the wedding invitations?

There are always interesting alternative wedding gifts that can also help contribute to the big and memorable day. I have had several friends that have both given and received gifts of service and it has always been meaningful, well-executed and beyond appreciated.

Maybe the bride cannot afford a photographer or discovers her gown alterations are about to leave her broke. Finding ways to help the couple create a magical day while also making it possible for you to attend their wedding and everyone wins. Think about all the things you can do to say congratulations!

When The Bride & Groom Say No To Wedding Gifts

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

There will be times, though not often, when a bride and groom will specifically request no wedding gifts. If you are invited to such a wedding you have two options. One, do not purchase a wedding gift. Two, make a donation in honor of the newlyweds and add some social responsibility to your wedding season.

My vote: go for the donation. Even the couple to be can’t say no to that idea and it is a wonderfully kind way to celebrate their new union. Just do not purchase a present if the couple clearly gives a thumbs down to wedding gifts.

As far as where to make a donation I would first recommend asking the couple if they have any already-established relationships with charities they support. If they do not then perhaps look for a charity that fits with their interests or alumni affiliations. Should you need help in picking a donation recipient Charity Navigator is a great online resource for evaluating the work of different domestic and international non-profit organizations.

June Theme - Gearing Up For Gifts

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
Creative Custom Cardbox
Cardbox designed by Creative Custom Cardbox

With Memorial Day now behind us, the summer wedding season is officially on. How many weddings do you have between now and Labor Day? I have three.

Three weddings equals three gifts and that is roughly $450 dollars to budget for presents - of course split 50/50 with my boyfriend, so $225 each - with four additional weddings to fall towards the end of the year (so another $600 to sort out later).

How did I come up with this budget? I estimate that on average my boyfriend and I will spend about $150 per gift, though his first cousin is getting married in August so I imagine we will spend a little more on her. My boyfriend and I have yet to discuss this year’s gift plans so I will update you if the joint budget is vastly different from what I have just proposed.

This is why I am dedicating the month of June to the topic of wedding gifts. First and foremost, you are never obligated to give a gift in order to attend a wedding, but it is a very thoughtful and generous gesture towards two people forming a union. Second, any gift that is thoughtfully selected is a great gift - whether or not it is on a registry. Third, it is more than fine to give cash. Fourth, if you are attending a destination wedding, your attendance can absolutely count as your gift.

Throughout the month I will be writing on topics like finances, registries, honeymoon funds, group gifts, gift alternatives and more. I hope you will come along for the ride and both ask questions and share your stories. Let us all help each other survive. And stick around, because we are going to feature a great June gift-inspired contest!

One Bride’s Favorite Wedding Gift: Giftybox

Monday, March 29th, 2010

When I started this site a married friend of mine told me I had to write about Giftybox. This was one of her and her husband’s favorite gifts from their wedding. Or should I say favorite unexpected gifts as it was not a part of their registry.

A Giftybox is a gift certificate for a unique experience. Of the three types of experiences offered by Giftybox, my friends received two Wine Tour & Tasting Giftyboxes which they saved to celebrate their one-year anniversary. The two other Gifty experiences: the Classes box and the Adventure box.

Giftybox also offers the Experience Collection which is essentially all three boxes in one. And based on the partners listed on their site it looks as if boxes can be redeemed almost anywhere nationwide. All said, Giftybox might be just right for both a last-minute wedding gift shopper and an adventure-seeking couple-to-be.  Just be advised that Giftybox experiences are one per person so for a wedding gift you will need to buy two. www.giftybox.com
